Are the oil rigs you see of the coast of central California operational?

Many of them still pump oil, but in smaller quantities and some have used up existing underwater oil fields. Four oil platforms in the Santa Barbara Channel were removed in 1996. Oil companies have slowly been removing oil rigs off the California coast ever since, because in most places, even if there is oil left, it is not enough for the companies to be profitable. Removal is an enormous undertaking, which takes years of planning.
