Are octopus endangered?

According to the National Zoo website, there are no protected octopus species and none are listed on the ICUN red list.  They do however state that the reason that they are not on the list may have less to do with their actual status, but more to do with the fact that it is difficult to count octopus population.  Octopusses are sensitive to polluted water, so that is of concern for the future of the octopus populations.

Not as a whole, but there are several sub-species that have low numbers, due to overfishing. These include the blue ringed octopus and the giant octopus, along with several other lesser known sub-species.
