Both new and old microwaves emit radiation. As long as they are fully functional, meaning they seal properly and adhere to the FDA’s ‘safe levels,’ the age of a microwave should matter little. To reduce the risk of adverse health effects, it is recommended to avoid standing near a microwave while it is on.
Although I can not find anything to back this up, I think it is safe to assume that over time we have developed better ways of keeping the radiation down, but as the previous answer says, they are mostly safe as long as we don’t stand in front of them while they’re in use!
