Are most of the things people throw in the trash still usable?

Although usability is dubious (40.4% of our trash is paper and paper products, which can be hard to reuse), the majority of the things in Americans’ trash are either recylable or compostable. 11.6% of our trash falls into an “other” category (“rubber, leather, textiles, wood, miscellaneous inorganic wastes”), much of which, I imagine, could be repurposed, reused, or donated to those with uses for the discared materials.
