Are most deserts in the world getting larger because of global warming?

Yes. A moderate estimate from the Intergovernmental Panel of Climate Change predicts that deserts across the world will expand ten percent worldwide by the year 2100. The rate of desertification could actually be as much as 34 percent; exact numbers are hard to predict in global cases like this.

What we do know is that a number of large deserts across the world are rapidly enlarging. Areas around the Mediterranean Sea, the arid Sahel region of Africa, and China’s famous Gobi desert are being closely monitored by ecoscientists tracking their rate of expansion.
