Mirrors are not the same thing as glass. While earlier mirrors were made by simply polishing a reflective surface, the process by which modern mirrors are made is much more involved. To get a highly reflective surface, liquid metals are melted so that they condense onto a layer of glass. Thus, you view yourself through a thin layer of glass, but the most reflective properties of the modern mirror are the metals.
