Are microgenerators energy hogs?

No, they aren’t.  The purpose of microgenerators is to provide a low- to zero-emission method to provide energy.  They typically make use of solar panels or wind turbines to provide their electricity (although some do have hookups to a main power grid) which offsets the need to a large, high-power energy source.
