Are Mekong river dolphins extinct?

They are not extinct yet, but nearly extinct. Environmental contaminants got into the Mekong River from an unknown source and this has been the main cause of pollution killing dolphins in this area.

Sadly, these creatures are nearly extinct. The Mekong is heavily polluted and only about 150 to 160 river dolphins remain. Since the population of the dolphins has become so small, inbreeding has been an issue and dolphins have been born with weakened immune systems as a result.
