With the extremely fast population growth of humans in many of the developing countries in Africa, it seems a though lions are going extinct. Wild lions numbers are down to 23,000 in 2003 from around 200,000 in 1980. The main problem seems to be the conflict between farmers encroaching on to areas formerly inhabited by lions. This had lead to conflicts when lions or other large predators eat livestock and are killed by the farmer.
