Leeches have been used in modern medicine to consume excess blood during certain procedures such as plastic and reconstructive surgeries. The leech prevents dangerous clots and reduces the swelling in the tissues promoting healing by allowing fresh, oxygenated blood to reach the area.
Some people believe that leeches have medicinal uses and they use the leeches to alleve problems like muscle tension, arthritis, and heart diseases, among other conditions. In early medicine, they were used for curing illnesses by removing “bad blood” and can also help enhance circulation before an amputated limb is reconnected.
