Koala bears were extensively hunted and nearly driven to extinction by westerners up until the seventieth century. Recently however, the Australian Government has taken major steps to bolster their numbers. It is officially registered as a primary concern of the Australian government, and extensive conservation legislation as well as protective breeding sites and captivity have allowed them to maintain relatively stable and healthy numbers. However, if global warming and habitat destruction continue, they could face the distinct possibility of extinction.
