No. They are much less harmful, that’s the reason environmentalists are encouraging their use so much. Consider the difference between biogas, a way of creating electricity from existing manure, vs. using coal, which requires mining that damages the earth, and exposure to coal ash, which causes cancer. Consider diesel, which requires mining for petroleum, vs. veggie oil, which involves re-using existing oil from restaurants and food production. If they were just as harmful, the incentive to develop them would be low, and their advocates much fewer.
