Good question, 090adden. Getting stuck with a spine from a jumping cholla cactus may be painful, but they are not poisonous. A lot of the pain from the spines is due to the presence of microscopic barbs:

That photo of the barbs is pretty amazing, I had no idea cacti needles had those. Is it just the jumping cholla that has these barbs or other cacti too?
Hey cerberus, thats a good question. it took some searching…. but i found that barbed spines are only found on cacti from the opuntia species.
