This depends on the species of jellyfish or stingray. Jellyfish typically only sting humans when direct contact occurs. The jellyfish release stingers as a natural defense mechanism that they usually utilize to catch prey. There are over 200 species of jellyfish, and only a few have stings that can be fatal. Most stingray stings occur as a defense mechanism when people accidentally step on them (they lie on the ocean floor camouflaged in sand). Death is more rare, since a victim typically has to bleed to death from a wound, though stingray venom can cause many health complications.
