Are insects important to a healthy garden?

A healthy population of local insects can be essential to the health of a garden – and maintaining such a population means using few or no synthetic pesticides on your plants.  Predatory insects such as wasps, assassin bugs, and many beetle species are important because they help control other insects that could otherwise become pests.  Meanwhile insect pollinators like bees, flies, and butterflies are needed for most garden flowers to reproduce.  Finally, insects and other invertebrates in the soil help produce healthy ground for your plants to grow in.
