There are three types of hyenas striped, spotted and brown. Striped hyenas have been endangered since 1970 in Morocco, Tunisia and Algeria. Also put on the list in 1970 is the brown hyena, which is endangered in southern Africa. The spotted hyena has the largest range of the three and is not protected or endangered.
According to the IUCN’s Red List, a database of the world’s endangered species, spotted hyenas are currently “of least concern”. Its hyena brothers, the brown and striped hyena, are both “near threatened”, with decreasing populations.
