This is a good question and one I debate often as well. One approach is to state that any improvement in fuel economy is a good one, even if it is only from 14 to 16 mpg. So, from this respect the hybrid is helping. However, since the SUV is now more appealing to people and they feel less guilty about purchasing it, customers who may otherwise switch to hybrid sedans stick with the SUV. Hopefully the advances in electric vehicles and renewable energy technologies will make this a moot point, as all vehicles will run with zero emissions. Until then, oxymoron hybrid SUV- yes and no.
