Are home fetal heart monitors a good idea?

British scientists are cautioning against the false security provided by the use of fetal home monitors, citing the recent case of a woman whose baby died in utero. Though the baby had ceased moving, the woman thought she could hear the heartbeat with the home monitor, and thus failed to see her doctor. The scientists say that an untrained ear can have a hard time distinguishing between the sounds of a mother’s blood flow or pulse and a baby’s heartbeat.
