Are hippos hunted for food?

There isn’t that much evidence that hippos are hunted for food, but they are hunted for for other reasons. Sometimes they are used as lion bait, and other times they are hunted for their hide and tusks.

They definitely have been hunted for food in recent years in Burundi and the Congo. In both places, it is an expensive delicacy, but sells out quickly when it reaches the market. Apparently, the locals enjoy the way hippos taste more than they care about the declining populations of hippos. The poachers are usually soldiers, rebels, or former soldiers.
