Overall hardwoods are less available and are generally more expensive than softwoods. Hardwoods come from leaf-bearing trees such as maple, cherry, oak, ash, walnut birch and poplar. They are usually considered to have more even tones and grains. Some exotic hardwoods such as teak or mahogany are more expensive because they are more difficult to procure. Softwoods include cone-bearing trees such as fir, pine, cypress and redwood. Some hardwoods such as gum compete in price with softwoods. The name ‘hard’ or ‘soft’ does not indicate actual hardness of the wood.
