Grizzly bears are not still on the endangered species list. They are still a rare animal, but they came off of the list in 2005. Grizzly bears are on the California flag, but cannot be found in the state of California.
The status of the grizzly bear in the lower 48 states of the United States has been in debate for the last decade. The grizzly was de-listed in 2007, but was ordered back on in 2009 after Federal Judge Donald Molloy determined that there were no protection efforts in place to ensure the future of the bear. Like the gray wolf, once the animal was de-listed, record numbers are killed in state-supported hunts. Last month, the Interagency Grizzly Committee and met in Missoula to promote de-listing once again, citing better management plans, and education in the community.
