Are green roofs used to save energy or control runoff?

There are many benefits to green roofs – including both saving energy and controlling runoff. The roofs can regulate temperatures and reduce both heat loss and heat gain, saving energy. The roofs also store storm water and will filter any water that happens to runoff. For an entire list and description of benefits, check the citation below.

Green roofs do both. Runoff can be absorbed by the vegetation and materials of a green roof, while at the same time the roof acts as a strong insulter.
