Because of their proximity to the auto industry, oil refineries, and steel mills, the great lakes are pretty polluted. However, it is argued that that they are not the most polluted. That title goes to Onondaga Lake in New York. The lake is so polluted becaues of human activity, and general and industrial waste disposal into the lake, as well as sewage contamination. In fact, the lake contains such a high concentration of contaminants, that it has been declared a hazardous waste site by the EPA.
