Are the trees that get cut down worse for the environment than the fuel used to do it?

No, the fuel is worse for the environment. Trees are a renewable resource, and as long as they are cut down responsibly, logging presents no major threat to the environment. The drilling, processing and burning of fuels for the logging industry is much worse.
