Some geodes can be pretty expensive. A geode is formed under special circumstances that scientists don’t quite fully understand. Basically, in order for a geode to form, there needs to be a hollow spot within a rock where the crystals can form. Geodes form within dolomite (a limestone-like sedimentary rock) and rhyolite (lava rock). Because of the specific types of conditions they form under, some types of geodes are fairly rare and can cost a lot of money (the first link below will take you to a place where they sell geodes, so you can see for yourself how much the crystals from the geodes cost).
In many places in the midwest (Iowa, Illinois, Indiana) geodes can be collected for free at many road cuts.
