Are genetically modified foods harmful?

There is a great deal of controversy surrounding genetically modified foods.  Here are some concerns:

    • Potential human health impacts, including allergens, transfer of antibiotic resistance markers, unknown effects
    • Potential environmental impacts, including: unintended transfer of transgenes through cross-pollination, unknown effects on other organisms (e.g., soil microbes), and loss of flora and fauna biodiversity
    • Violation of natural organisms’ intrinsic values
    • Tampering with nature by mixing genes among species

Portions of many bacterial gene sequences are fused into GMO plant genomes through genetic engineering. One of the potential side effects involves the fusion of portions of this genetically altered plant genome into human gut bacteria.  These transgenic gut bacteria then produce different proteins in the small intestine, which may cause an ongoing allergic reaction and other detrimental effects.
