Free-range is not a well enforced label. If chickens are free range, they could be cage-free all day, or just for five minutes. The free-range label, for this reason, doesn’t really mean much, and free-range chickens probably don’t differ significantly from regular commerically-raised chickens, in terms of health. In order to ensure you are consuming chickens that are healthy to eat, you should purchase chickens which that are “certified humane raised and handled”. This is a well enforced certification. Chickens bearing this label have been raised in a humane way and been fed a diet free of antibiotics and additives (i.e., they are organic).
