Are flocked Christmas trees bad for the environment?

Christmas tree flocking and its effects on the environment depends on the method in which the flock is applied. Many retail flocking kits contain biodegradable, fire-proof (not necessarily that it stops fires, it just won’t catch) material that is safe to use. Trees that come pre-flocked may use propellants that aren’t necessarily safe for the environment. The only way to be sure is flock your tree yourself, or forgo it entirely.
