Are float planes bad for the environment?

Yes, but they are comparatively better than most cars or planes.  Float planes (or seaplanes) are typically used to access areas which are usually environmentally sensitive.  Float planes cause very little noise pollution for a plane (they are about as loud as a truck).  Also, float planes do not run lake water through the engine as coolant (as many boats do) and they do not have a bilge which can pump oil into the water.
