They potentially can be. Fertilizers are easily tracked inside and are harmful to people when inhaled or absorbed through the skin. Overexposure to fertilizers can cause an increased chance ofeukemia, asthma, allergies, birth defects and a decreased chance of fertility. They also seep into ground water and surface water, contaminating it, some of which we drink.

According to the California Public Interest Research Group (CALPIRG) Charitable Trust and Washington’s Safe Food and Fertilizer, 29 fertilizers that were tested from 12 states showed evidence of 22 toxic metals. Concerns for public health are serious and legitimate. One of the issues associated with the fertilizer industry is inadequate labeling which puts consumers at risk because they are not fully informed about the their choices. Toxins have been related to human health issues related to human reproductive systems, developmental systems. Toxins also affect the liver and blood.
