The black-footed ferret is native to North America. The domestic ferret, has been domesticated for thousands of years and there are records of them in Greek and Roman times. There are some reports of ferrets in ancient Egypt, but no real proof they lived there in those times. It is thought that domestic ferrets may have come from North Africa. There are no wild ferrets anymore and they cannot survive without human aid, but there are some hybridized ferrets that survive in feral packs in a few places such as New Zealand and the Shetland Islands.
