Are feathers necessary for birds to fly?

Yes because the feathers on the wings provide the lift necessary for flight. Without the feathers, the air would just go through the wing bones and no propulsion would be created to allow the bird to fly. Feathers are lightweight as well as durable which is why they have helped the bird to evolve so extensively.
