Both China and India have begun widespread adoption and promotion of electric vehicles. 30 million electric bikes were sold in China last year and India has passed a series of incentives for purchases of electric vehicles. The largest electric car company, REVA, is an Indian company.
Most electricity generation in China, India, and other developing countries – as well as the United States – comes from burning coal. So increasing electric vehicle use, at least in the short- to medium term, in those countries, will see a significant increase in coal mining and burning.
