They always were a pretty good deal in terms of overall value. The great thing about an electric car is that electric engines just don’t break down like internal combustion engines. I know someone who converted a gas car to an electric and has used the same engine in three different car bodies. He put over 150,000 miles on the thing so far.
As for commercially produced electric vehicles, they are more expensive than they should be because there are not many of them on the market and the demand is higher than the supply. As more auto manufacturers put out their version of an electric vehicle and compete with each other to have the best price, you will probably see prices dropping. That is due partly to basic economic forces and partly to improvements in battery technology.
