Well they do require electricity to run, but you can charge them with solar power. When you think about the physical books and cds that do not have to be made because of these devices, they do make a significant impact on the environment. They save not only the physical ingredients of books and cds but they also save on the labor, and the wasted energy of shipping and storing the books and cds. So yes, e-readers and ipods are better for the environment.
