Are dyes in clothes bad for the environment?

It really depends on the dye. There are most certainly natural dyes out there that use materials like roots and plants to color clothes. Other clothes are dyed using artificial dyes and unnatural processes; these are most likely way worse for the environment then the natural dyes.

Natural dyes are the answer. The use of specific tree barks, roots, vegetables, flowers, berries and nuts here in Thailand make sure the colour dyes are not bad for the environment. However, be careful as some manufacturers use natural dyes but then add chemicals for finishing and for added weighting – this completely negates the whole natural dye advantages.
