In my home state of Massachusetts, during the 2008 election, Proposition 3 passed, which meant that the greyhound race parks that operate in Massachusetts have to close by 2010. 56 percent of voters said yes for a myriad of reasons, including inhumane treatment of dogs, lives of inhumane treatment, and the failure of greyhound industry as a whole. The 44 percent who voted no believed that the industry shouldn’t be banned but tighter regulations should be made on the treatment of animals. They believed that the industry employed a great many people who would be out of jobs and believe many of the allegations of poor animal treatment were unfounded and exaggerated.
