Yes. Outside dogs defiantly need somewhere to go to escape the weather. It also provides a ‘den’ for them where they can feel safe and secure from other animals. Many people never let their outside dogs in the house, so a dog house is the dog’s only shelter.
Although dogs require shelter of some sort, dog houses are not absolutely necessary. Shelter for them can be a simple as the underneath of a porch, or a small corner of the backyard covered by a tarp. Giving a dog access to the garage through a doggy door is also a good alternative to getting a dog house. I’ve actually had some dogs that wouldn’t even go inside a dog house, so sometimes it’s just the personality of the dog to not need one.
