Are diesel hybrids really a viable long-term alternative, or should truck manufacturers pursue other options?

No hybrid vehicle is a long term solution, as all hybrids require gasoline to function, and that is a finite resource. Some examples of long term solutions would be electric cars, hydrogen fuel cells, or bio-fuels made from plant cellulose. In general the only long term solutions come from a renewable energy source.
