Are the diesel engines in trucks better for the environment than the regular gas engines?

This is a tough question. Per litre, diesel gas emits more, but diesel fuel burns more efficiently so per mileage it might be gasoline. Diesel also emits high sulfur levels and is very dirty in the US. Diesel is better for ground seepage than gasoline. The conclusion: hybrids and electrics are better than both.
