Are corn products more eco friendly than their replacements?

The issue with corn is that it is not quick growing, requires fertilizer and lots of water to grow, irrigation systems and consume close to as much energy as can be produced from the corn products. Therefore, they are relatively more eco-friendly than products not made from a biological resource, but not as eco-friendly as a self sufficient source of energy such as algae would be.
