Are oil companies still opening new drill sites in Alaska?

In November, Shell Oil Co. requested permission from the government to drill for oil in the Chuckchi sea of Alaska.  The Obama Administration delayed the decision.

Of interesting note is that, in 2006, a resolution was passed in the Alaskan town of Kaktovik that authorized the mayor to take legal and other actions to defend the community, as they labeled Shell as a “Hostile and dangerous force.” In general, it seems that most of the other areas of Alaska oppose it as well with the common theme being that their way of life and food sources will be threatened.
