If comparing machines that are all Energy Star certified, a commercial machine will usually be more efficient. Commercial washers are often designed for extra-large capacities, making them more efficient per pound of laundry. Factors such as the size, make, and model of the machine will come into play, however, and that may change the answer in some cases.
The information out there appears to be sketchy on this. I would suspect that a commercial machine would be more efficient, as more clothing could be washed in one cycle.
