Are classes necessary for a successful civilization?

To some degree, I believe you need some type of class system. There has to be some definitive and clear hierarchy in any natural order for a system to work. I would use the nature as an example of this. Even in areas like the African Savannah where you have millions and millions of animals, seemingly of equal importance(that is they feed on vegetation), there exists some type of counterbalancing force, in this case, predators, to keep they system in a sustainable and continued loop. I think that in a civilization, you could have this, the vast majority of people as equals, but you require a higher class, an upper tier to keep things in balance and harmonious. Otherwise, you risk throwing things into imbalance.
