Are cities like Las Vegas even self sustaining in the middle of a desert?

Las Vegas, as well as other major cities, is in no way self sustaining. It imports its water over 250 miles from the Colorado River. All of its electricity is imported from power plants outside of the city and because there is no agriculture in the city itself it has to be imported from other areas of Nevada and from around the world. That being said, the whole idea of a self sustaining city is a pretty tall order and I’d be pressed to find any city that was entirely self sustained.
