The chemicals used in darkrooms can be hazardous to your health. When working with these chemicals to develop photos, they can be absorbed through the skin if care is not taken. Also, inhaling chemical vapors and powders is a risk posed by photo developing chemicals. However, problems from these chemicals usually arise from long-term exposure. Such health issues include cancer, lung problems, depression, and allergic reactions. For example, photo developers can cause methemoglobinemia, which prevents hemoglobin from transporting oxygen.
