Are cell phones a threat to the environment?

Yes, the waste produced by people throwing away their old cell phones is massive. Around 140 million cell phones are contributed to landfills every year; people replace their cell phones every 12-18 months on average.

Cell phones can also contain toxic substances: arsenic, lead, mercury, cadmium, and beryllium. Once they are in landfills, they may seep into the ground and affect water systems.
