Are cell phones better for the environment than land lines?

Absolutely not. People tend to keep a landline phone for many years without buying a new one.  But we constantly “upgrade” our cell phones, resulting in 125 million tons of discarded cell phones ending up in land fills every year.

What’s worse, cell phone circuitry contains some very toxic substances that, once in landfills, leak into the atmosphere and into our water supply. This causes cancer and other health problems in the community…  It’s a huge problem that unfortunately most people don’t know about.

Land lines (especially the old ones with a chord) didn’t need to be plugged into an outlet. Now there are millions of cell phone chargers plugged at all times  which continue to draw energy when the phone isn’t even charging. For more info, check out this GreenAnswers Blog post.
