Ceiling fans are normally more efficient than portable box fans, but this can depend on the application. While box fans can sell for $20-50, ceiling fans are more in the range of $75-150. So, if a temporary solution for a short living period is your goal, the box fan may be better. However, for long-term solutions, especially in regions that require both heating and cooling, ceiling fans are the better option. Installed properly, ceiling fans will help by making a room feel up to 5 degrees cooler in the summer while more evenly distributing heat in the winter. Box fans, unfortunately, do not offer this flexibility and work primarily in cooling only conditions. And new energy saving ceiling fans run for pennies in electrical costs compared to dollars for air conditioners.
