Some caterpillars, called stinging caterpillars, are poisonous. Stinging caterpillars don’t actually possess stingers, but instead are covered in spines or barbed hooks that are connected to poison sacs. The poison can cause reactions in humans such itching, pain and intestinal problems. Interestingly, many nonpoisonous caterpillars have spines or bright colorings (but no poison) in order to scare away predators.
